Caet La FAQ/Instructions
Version 0.8
By Darknight

OVERVIEW

If you're reading this, you're either interested in what this Game Shark/Pro Action Replay upgrade is or you want to know how it works and already have the upgrade. Caet La ver. 0.28 was programmed by someone in Japan. You can find his web site at: http://www.netlaputa.or.jp/~iwata/kcomm. It will be in Japanese though. In case you didn't know, the Pro Action Replay and Game Shark are the same device under a different name. However other than some minor differences which you'll most likely never see, they are identical and are completely compatible. However beware of imitation Pro Action Replays out there. You typically can tell simply by the price, or by the box that its not made by Datel. There are some incompatibilities with these. One instance was while upgrading to Caet La ver. 0.27 was ok, there was no way to enable the codes feature. Otherwise all the other features worked fine. So please make sure that you're using an official Game Shark or Pro Action Replay if you want all features turned on. I am in no way connected into the development of this software other than someone who appreciates the neat features this offers. This ROM update for the Game Shark is in no way related to Datel's updates to the Game Shark/Pro Action Replay and most of these features will most likely not be a part of an official upgrade.

CURRENT SOFTWARE VERSION

  • Fast forward, rewind, pause while playing any FMV file

  • Fast forward, rewind, pause while playing any XA audio file
  • View the contents of any PlayStation game

  • Skip the long initial load by loading directly into the game (3 seconds vs. 15 to 20)

    BASIC CONTROLS

    Circle - Selects
    X - Cancels
D-Pad - Moves through the menus

    LOAD GAME

This is pretty self-explanatory. This mode simply boots up the game without any codes.

    LOAD PAR GAME

When you select whatever game cheat code you want to use, instead of going into the first option, you'll want to enter this so that the code will work.

    CHEAT CODE

This is pretty much the same feature as your standard Game Shark/Pro Action Replay. You can add codes, delete, and select codes for usage in this mode. To delete a code, hit Triangle on the PS Controller. This will ask if you are sure you want to delete this code. The default setting is no so move it to highlight yes. To move up and down a whole screen full of codes, use L1 and R1 to scroll up and down. Since this is still a Game Shark/Pro Action Replay, there is no difference between the codes that work in here, and the ones you're used to.

    MEMORY CARD

One of the more useful features is the memory card manager. This is quite similar to the existing manager that's build into the PlayStation, however its about 10 times quicker in execution. It'll still show the various icons for your save data and give a description for that file when you select it with the cursor. Once you put in the memory card, it'll instantly show the contents. It no longer takes a few seconds to read the whole contents of the card. When you copy a file, its instant as well. No more waiting for the whole file to move over. It does take a bit longer if you're copying more than one file, but to compare the two, it takes 15 seconds to copy a full card to a blank card where as it would normally take about 2 minutes and 15 seconds to copy it in the normal memory management. That's 800% faster! For those of you with version 1.94 and 1.99 of the Game Shark and Pro Action Replay, you'll notice their memory card management is just as slow as the original PlayStation memory manager. Another new minor feature is the ability to delete the complete contents of a memory card. From left to right on the screen, the selections are Copy, Copy All, Delete, Delete All, and Exit.

    VIDEO RAM DISPLAY

There isn't too much usage for this feature, but it is kind of neat. While you're playing a game, simply hit the reset button. Whatever was currently being shown in the Video RAM will be accessable in this feature. L1 and R1 will toggle the horizontal resolution. L2 will toggle the vertical resolution. R2 will toggle the color depth. Using the d-pad, you can move scroll around the contents.

    CD-ROM

Here is my favorite feature. When you enter this, you can view the contents of the PlayStation game that is currently in the drive. If you see an SLPS file, or a file with an extension of .exe, when you select this it will run a program on the PlayStation. Depending on what it is, sometimes it will boot up the game, sometimes it will just boot up part of the game and crash. The most useful files are the FMV and sampled audio files. FMV files can typically be found with the extension of .str and .mov. When you select these it should say Movie-XXXX and display a running time. Also listed will be Audio-XXXX. If you click on the movie, it will display the FMV as it would in a normal game. If you pick the Audio portion of it, you can simply listen to the audio of the FMV. The other type of file usually has an extension of .xa after it. When you select these, only Audio-XXXX will be shown. Resident Evil has music and voices done in XA format. A lot of the time you can easily find these files simply because they are organized in directories. FMV files tend to be under the directory Movie, and XA files either under Sound or XA. While these examples cover most of the games out there, every now and then there will be a file labeled differently but be that type of file that is playable. You can experiment around by just selecting various files. It won't let you play much else so it will tell you its not playable. When you are playing a movie or audio file, you do have some control over the content. L1 rewinds, R1 fast forwards, Triangle turns the time display on, Square pauses, Circle Plays, and X stops. When making your way through directories, Circle will enter that directory where as going up a branch can be done by hitting X or by selecting '..' and hitting Circle.
